NMPC Dental Procedure Codes

Dental treatment codes are a standardized system describing specific dental procedures and services performed by dentists in Bulgaria. The main goal of this system is to introduce a single terminology that will not only unify the descriptions of dental services in the country, but also facilitate the understanding and mutual recognition of treatments between Bulgaria and other countries in Europe.

Initially, there were about 11 dental treatment codes. However, in August 2024, they were increased and refined to 403 separate codes (with the Ordinance amending Ordinance No. 42 of 2004 on the introduction of classification statistical systems for coding diseases and health-related problems and medical procedures, published in the State Gazette, issue 69 of August 16, 2024, entering into force on January 1, 2025). This significant increase aims to ensure unambiguous, transparent and detailed designation of all performed dental interventions in one patient. This way, better control, higher quality of reporting and a more accessible information base are achieved for both medical specialists and patients.

The following procedures may be included in the treatment protocol for calculus and plaque removal in the dental office: examination, cleaning and polishing of the teeth.\n\nAlthough the Bulgrian NHIF covers only one dental examination per year, an additional examination is recorded with each patient visit to the Bulgarian HIS (without filling in a dental status).

During the treatment of a cavity on a front tooth in a single visit, the following steps are typically performed and can be reported in the Bulgarian Health Information System (НЗИС) using specific codes:

  • Oral Examination An initial assessment of the oral cavity to identify and evaluate the cavity.
  • Terminal Anesthesia Application of local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth, ensuring a painless procedure.
  • Adhesive Restoration of a Front Tooth Restoring the affected tooth with adhesive material for one surface (use [97522-01] for two surfaces or [97523-01] for three or more surfaces).

These steps ensure accurate diagnosis, pain management, and effective restoration of the tooth’s function and appearance. While the Bulgarian National Health Insurance Fund generally covers only one dental examination per year, additional reviews without a full dental status can be reported in НЗИС for each visit.

To log the review in the Bulgarian HIS, you can use the following codes:

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, codes are standardized and are applied equally to all patients. They reflect the procedure, not the specifics of the patient. However, always consider individual characteristics in the clinical documentation.

All codes are valid and comply with the amendments published in the State Gazette, Issue 69, dated August 16, 2024.

Yes, it is often necessary. For example, in a complete tooth restoration, there may be separate codes for diagnosis, anesthesia, filling placement, and final assessment. It is important to ensure that each code reflects the actual procedure performed.

Each system is developed based on local regulations, clinical practices, and market conditions. Some procedures are specific to a country or methodology, which leads to differences in nomenclature and the number of codes.
